Chemicals

Unless otherwise noted, all chemicals come packed in a twist-tied plastic bag in a sealed, reusable plastic tub. Some, very light-weight, high-volume chemicals (like air float charcoal, lampblack, and Cab-O-Sil) are packed in boxes instead of tubs. Each container is labeled and contains a material safety data sheet (MSDS) for that chemical. The chemicals we supply are generally technical grade, sometimes better. Technical grade is generally defined as "chemicals of reasonable purity".

CH8193

Methylene Chloride

(dichloromethane) [CH2Cl2] Clear liquid

Mainly used as a paint stripper and a degreaser. In the food industry, it is used to decaffeinate coffee and to prepare extracts of hops and other flavorings. Its volatility has led to its use as an aerosol spray propellant and as a blowing agent for polyurethane foams. It is also used as a fumigant pesticide for stored strawberries and grains. It’s used as a paint remover that does not harm wood in the removal process and can be used to reduce the flammability of other substances, decreasing the chance of in-plant fire or explosion. It’s also often necessary for the removal of grease, oil, or similar substances used as lubricants or temporary protective coatings during metal fabrication.

Potassium Perchlorate

[KClO4] Fine, white powder

Oxidizer. 5 pound minimum order.

Potassium perchlorate until recently was used to treat hyperthyroidism resulting from Grave's disease, and is still used diagnostically to test thyroid hormone production in some clinical settings. In addition, potassium perchlorate is used in protective breathing equipment on Air National Guard (ANG) aircraft for use in the event of depressurization, and in naval emergency escape breathing devices. Other uses of perchlorate salts include in nuclear reactors and electronic tubes, as additives in lubricating oils, in solid fuels in rockets and missiles, road flares, air-bag inflation systems, in tanning and finishing leather, as a fixer for fabrics and dyes, and in electoplating, in nuclear reactors, electronic tubes, aluminum refining, rubber manufacture, and production of paints and enamels. Commonly used in fertilizers, it’s also used for analytical chemistry, in gypsum cements, glass and aluminum manufacture.

One area of natural occurrence of potassium perchlorate is in potassium nitrate from Chile (Chile saltpeter), which may be used in chemical fertilizers originating from Chile.

Sodium Silicate

(Waterglass) [Na2O•2SiO2] Clear 40% solution

Comes in 1 quart, screw-top metal can.

40% concentration (+3.0 weight ratio) to be used in "Cash for Clunkers" program to cause engines to seize. Also in cements, textile and lumber processing. Sodium silicate is used, along with magnesium silicate in muffler repair paste. It can be used in older automobiles to seal leaks in the cooling system. Sodium silicate was also used as an egg preservation agent in the early 20th Century with large success. Used as a timber treatment for pressure-treated wood. Used to treat concrete to help to significantly reduce porosity in most masonry products such as concrete, stucco, plasters. It is a useful binder of solids, such as vermiculite and can be used to make hard, high-temperature insulation boards used for refractories, passive fire protection and high temperature insulations. It’s also used in soaps as an alkali. Also used as an old-time wadding seal for shotgun shells. Need more? Click the S above.

CH8291

Sodium Silicate

(Waterglass) [Na2O•2SiO2] Clear 40% solution

2-Quart plastic jug cuts your cost in half.

40% concentration (+3.0 weight ratio) to destroy "Cash for Clunkers" engines. The most economical package for disabling Cash for Clunkers engines. Narrow neck drains itself into crankcase.

Sodium silicate is SLOWER THAN MOLASSES! Literally. It takes forever to drain out of any container. This container has the exact amount required by the government to disable one engine. Just remove the top, drop the jug into the crankcase oil hole, and walk away.

BULK SODIUM SILICATE ACTUALLY COSTS YOU TWICE AS MUCH!

Sure, bulk is cheaper quart or gallon. But BULK SODIUM SILICATE WILL EAT YOU ALIVE IN LABOR COSTS AND WASTE.

It’s all about your time and labor to get the stuff into the engine.

That’s because you have to get bulk sodium silicate out of drum, pail, or bucket before you can dump it in the engine. In fact, it takes you more time to get it out of the bulk container than it does to empty our 2-quart container into the engine.

And if the person doing the work is worth $30 - $50 an hour in billable time, you just blew any savings you got buying your sodium silicate in bulk.

Here’s what happens.

Assuming you have your 5 gallon can or 55 gallon drum ready to pour. And that it is warm enough for the stuff to actually flow (forget it, if it’s 40 degrees F or less).
1. Fill a 2 quart container from the drum. Repeat as necessary. 3-5 minutes each.
2. Clean up spills and drips. They don’t call it “waterglass” for nothing! It hardens very quickly. 5-10 minutes.
3. With no pour spout, insert a funnel, hold the container over the crankcase until it’s empty. 5-7 minutes.
4. Wash reusable container, funnel, and spouts out thoroughly. 5 minutes
Total time: 20-27 minutes per engine per person. At $0.75 billable time per minute, that’s at least $15 in labor per engine just to fill it with sodium silicate. Add the cost of the sodium silicate, your total is $25-$35 per engine.

Not counting waste: Spillage and sodium silicate sticking to the inside or containers, funnels, spouts, etc. will easily waste 15-20% of the liquid you bought.

Or use our 2-quart container:
1. Take cap off, insert neck of jug into crankcase, and let drain. 30 seconds.
2. Remove jug 10 minutes later and throw away. 10 seconds.
Elapsed time, 40 seconds, or about 50 cents in labor plus cost of material, about $13.50 per engine.

There’s no waste, no cleanup. In fact, one operator can fill 40-50 the engines with 2-quart jugs of sodium silicate in the time it takes to fill one engine using bulk-packed sodium silicate!

2 Quart Jugs of Sodium Silicate. 6-pak $77.77

Some transparent gels can only be made with sorbitol as it has a refractive index sufficiently high for transparent formulations. It is also used as a humectant in some cigarettes. In candy manufacture, Sorbitol is used together with sugar to increase shelf life. In textile in applications Sorbitol is used as a dispensing agent, humectant, bodying agent and sequestering agent, it gives a soft feel, good drape and proven dimension stability to fabric.

Sulfur

[S] Yellow powder

Elemental sulfur is used in black powder, gunpowder, matches, pyrotechnics, and fireworks; in the vulcanization of rubber; in plant nutrition as a plant supplement and as a fungicide, insecticide, and fumigant; in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers; as a medicine in the treatment of certain skin diseases and as a pain suppressant in the bleaching of teeth; in bleaching dried fruits; and in paper products manufacture. The principal use of sulfur, however, is in the preparation of its compounds. The most important sulfur compound is sulfuric acid. Other important compounds include sulfur dioxide, used as a bleaching agent, disinfectant, and refrigerant; sodium bisulfite, used in paper manufacture; carbon disulfide, an important organic solvent; hydrogen sulfide, sulfur trioxide, and thionyl chloride, used as reagents in chemistry; Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate), used as a laxative, used to bleach hair on clydesdales, bath additive, exfoliant, and magnesium supplement in plant nutrition; the numerous other sulfate compounds; and sulfa drugs.

Flour (not the same as "flowers"). Ours is 99.9% pure and has a very low acid content.
